Students whose reading and math skills are at or above grade level by third grade are more likely to continue performing above grade level than those whose skills are not at grade level. Our goal is for every Kalamazoo County third grader to perform at or above grade level in reading and math.


KALAMAZOO COUNTY THIRD GRADE READING AND MATH PROFICIENCY

Achievement gaps by race/ethnicity continue. In 2014, 75% of white and 81% of Asian Kalamazoo County third graders scored at or above grade level for reading. In contrast, only 30% of black and 46% of Hispanic Kalamazoo County third graders read at or above grade level.

The disparity in math scores by race/ethnicity continues to be even more pronounced with all groups showing a decline in 2014. About 46% of white and 60% of Asian students performed at or above grade level in math. Proficiency levels for black and Hispanic students are alarmingly much lower, 14% and 22%, respectively.

BY SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS

A family’s socioeconomic status clearly makes a difference in student performance, as indicated by third grade reading and math proficiency rates. In 2014, 44% of economically disadvantaged third graders (those who qualified for free or reduced lunch) were considered proficient in reading. This contrasts significantly with non-economically disadvantaged students, 82% of whom were considered proficient readers.

Math proficiency levels also are particularly low for economically disadvantaged students. Only 21% were proficient in math in 2014. Stated another way, 79% of economically disadvantaged third graders in Kalamazoo County were not performing at grade level in math, compared to 46% of non-economically disadvantaged students.
